Andrea Burks, licensed mental health counselor, established Bayou Wellness on June 1, 2015. Her primary aim for this practice is to be a vessel for the work that the Holy Spirit desires to accomplish in the people He leads to Bayou Wellness. Andrea is a Christian and is passionate about biblical counseling and discipleship. She also welcomes the opportunity to work with clients who do not ascribe to any faith at all. Andrea seeks to implement an integrative approach to counseling through a creationist lens and enjoys working with highly motivated external processors interested in both self- and spiritual-exploration.
Andrea is a certified addictions professional (CAP) and is trained in both emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and Gottman therapy for couples. She is a co-facilitator and host of Bayou Wellness's weekend Marriage Intensives. She received her bachelor's degree in family and child sciences from Florida State University and her master's in counseling and psychology from Troy University. She has worked in the mental health field since 2009, both in private and agency settings.
"While the present day mental health field has a vastly growing body of research and a number of helpful counseling interventions, I believe that these methods of thought and behavior modification by themselves effect only superficial and short-term relief. Apart from the work of the Holy Spirit and the intentions and will of God, traditional psychotherapy methods fall short of true soul healing, which is only and always the supernatural work of God. Emotions exploration, belief replacement, behavior modification, and practical life skills are all essential to learn through the lens of God's design with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who is the greatest counselor of all."
Through both written and verbal interviews, a complete psychosocial assessment is conducted prior to all individual therapy sessions and marriage intensives. Intake Sessions are also weaved into the beginning phase of couples therapy.
